Technology and the Digital Space

I have been using Microsoft Word ever since I was in the third grade so, for about eleven years now. When I was in the eighth grade I took a class and became certified in Microsoft Word. I have used it to write papers, create posters, and take notes. Usually, I know where all the tools are in Word but when I forget where one is the help bar comes in handy. I have tried out Google Docs but I like Word better. I think the reason behind my preferring Word to other word processors is because I have known how to use it for quite some time.

The ISTE has seven standards for educators and they are learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, facilitator, and analyst. Every standard is important and helps teachers be good role models for their students. I feel that the most important standard is that teachers should be citizens and show their students how to be good and responsible online citizens. The internet is a big and daunting place, especially for students and they need to know how to navigate it. The teacher role is one that children put a lot of trust in so if a teacher demonstrates how to be responsible internet citizens in ways like respecting others and staying on safe websites, then the students will follow that example.

I do not agree with the terms "digital native and immigrant" for this generation or at all. To be a "digital native" means to be born and grow up with current technology and a "native" is someone who had to adapt to current technology. My reasoning is that because the term used to describe people changes with time. For example, I am described as a "digital native," if I was put in a modern classroom I feel like I wouldn't know how to use parts of technology and digital media in that classroom. That description is of a "digital immigrant" not a "native." This is why I think that we should just label people as "not well versed in the digital space" and "well versed in the digital space." We will all be "digital immigrants" one day just like we were all, most likely "digital natives" because technology is always changing and we move the classroom with it. I think that I will be like most teachers when it comes to new technology. I would be confused at first but I'll make for sure to have everything I need pulled up before class so class time isn't wasted on me trying to figure out how to work something.

  1. As long as you keep up with new technologies through professional development, you will be fine. The important thing is to incorporate right technologies into your pedagogy to enhance students' learning.
