The Classroom in the Digital Era

This was my first experience with Twitter and it was a bit of a learning curve. I have been keeping a lookout for the #fsu2040. I've seen people posting relatable memes about how the semester is going and how we're all tired. I really like how on Twitter you can follow a hashtag and people with common interests can use that hashtag to keep track of each other. I could use this in my career by following hashtags about English education and high school classrooms. I could use this in my current career by following hashtags about elementary schools and teaching kids how to read.

I have a personal connection to the digital divide. I grew up in a rural county and when COVID hit and classes were no longer in person, we couldn't move to online because many students in my school had no internet access. The school's solution was to give every student SAT and ACT preparation packets. This was not beneficial for all students, ninth graders didn't know the math and science portions and upperclassmen were bored and didn't find the material engaging. The next year my school gave students laptops just in case school shut down again. Luckily school didn't but students with no internet connection at home would be at a severe loss if school did because they would have a laptop but no internet. One major cause of the digital divide is poverty. Students living in poverty can't go to a home with great internet connection and computers. Before I would start a year at a school teaching I could survey the class and see how many students have access to the internet at home and then base my assignments off of that data.

I would like to incorporate the use of Kahoot and ClassDojo in my classroom. I would use Kahoot as a review tool before tests and to do class polls in the morning to get an idea about how my students are feeling that day. I enjoyed playing Kahoot in grade school, class competitions made people work together and we always had a good time. At my job at an elementary school I see teachers use Class Dojo. They use this as a classroom management tool. If a student is misbehaving they get a point taken away from them. ClassDojo also has a noise control function. Teachers can project the noise-meter on the board and when students get too loud it sets off an alarm signaling to the students that they need to quiet down.

I think that badges are a good way to encourage students to do things and deepen their learning experience. I haven't earned badges in the past but I've earned ribbons. I was involved in my local 4H club when I was younger. I raised two hogs and showed them and won third and second place. My mom posted me on Facebook and I loved reading people's comments on my two pigs.

  1. What a great story! Thank you for sharing your experience of digital divide in your school. Also, it was good to hear about a ribbon. I would also share the ribbons on my Facebook and put #proudmom hashtag if my son gets one. :-)
