EME Blog 1

Hi, I’m Oscar! I’m the oldest child out of my three siblings. When I graduate I hope to have my masters and bachelors and to use those degrees to be an English teacher. Some of my hobby’s include hanging out with friends, writing and caring for my houseplants. Over quarantine I needed something to keep me busy so I got into houseplants. 


I haven’t used that much technology in an education setting, but I’ve used some. I’ve used Canva to make posters and flyers for projects. When assigned to make a presentation I almost always use powerpoint, I find it the easiest option for me. Projectors and smart boards have been around since I was in elementary school and have always fascinated me.


I recently learned what a PLN (Personal Learning Network) is. My PLN includes my old teachers that I contact by text or e-mail. I ask them questions for writing papers. I also use google quite a bit to look up the meaning of certain words. I also use instagram to find new study methods.

    Hi Oscar, how would you connect with people through Google? Would you be more specific about online and offline spaces where you connect with people and share/acquire resources?

    Hi Hajeen! I look up questions that I have about certain topics and sometimes I'll find a blog with other people who are interesting in that topic. I'll read what they have to say and then apply that knowledge to answer my question. When I ask old teachers for academic advice I usually write it down and keep the paper so I can refer to it later. When I find an account on Instagram that I like, I'll follow it and then through the Instagram algorithm I get more similar accounts suggested. On those accounts people can comment and give opinions on what was posted.

    Hi Oscar! I am also the oldest child! As much as I love them, staying with my little brother and sister in quarantine was hell for me. I don't know if you feel the same way. I also plan on becoming an educator, and I wish you luck on that journey. We share a use of google to find the meaning of words. My search history is full of *blank* synonyms, as I absolutely hate redunancy in my own writing. Were houseplants a satisfying hobby for you? What is your favorite plant that you own?

The Importance of the Internet

 Looking at the standard LAFS.910.L.3.4, I feel prepared to teach it based on my current skill set. This standard basically says that a students needs to learn how to use context clues to find out a rough meaning of the word. Then the student should learn how to conjugate the word and use it in multiple scenarios. Then the student should learn how to look up the word in a dictionary or thesaurus. Then the student should learn how to verify their original guess of the meaning of the word against the dictionary or thesaurus. The reason why I feel that I could teach this is because I use these skills almost every day. When I don't know what a word means I use context clues and guess and then look it up in the online dictionary.  I feel this is a useful skill and I would be passionate about teaching it. EME2040 and OER's

 I am in an asynchronous EME2040 class. When I registered for this class, I didn't know what to expect, I honestly thought I was going to learn about projectors and smart boards because those were the only things I could think of when it came to educational technology. I have learned way more than projectors and smart boards, I've learned how to create a website, use social media for educational purposes and so much more. I like that I can schedule when I work on assignments because I'm in an asynchronous class instead of in-person or flex. When I am a teacher I plan on making my classroom an enjoyable experience by interacting with students and really getting to know them. This would make students feel welcome in my class and open to participation.  I have just recently learned about Open Educational Resources or OER's. What I've learned and how I'll keep learning

 Assignment five was a challenge to me at first. When I was looking at the requirements for a high pass I didn't know how I would get more than 20 slides in my PowerPoint. When I got started, I quickly found out that getting more than 20 slides would be a breeze. I learned how to make a jeopardy style game on PowerPoint. This will come in handy when I do class reviews while I am a teacher. I've attached a screenshot of my PowerPoint. I think that I will use surveys in my class as a first day get to know you game. This would be used by making a QR code that students could scan with their phone and take the survey. I would ask questions about what types of texts that they like to read and what they like to write about. This would be an easy way to understand what I could teach in my class to appeal to my students.
