What I've learned and how I'll keep learning

Image
Assignment five was a challenge to me at first. When I was looking at the requirements for a high pass I didn't know how I would get more than 20 slides in my PowerPoint. When I got started, I quickly found out that getting more than 20 slides would be a breeze. I learned how to make a jeopardy style game on PowerPoint. This will come in handy when I do class reviews while I am a teacher. I've attached a screenshot of my PowerPoint. I think that I will use surveys in my class as a first day get to know you game. This would be used by making a QR code that students could scan with their phone and take the survey. I would ask questions about what types of texts that they like to read and what they like to write about. This would be an easy way to understand what I could teach in my class to appeal to my students. I feel that this would help my students engage in class because we would be studying texts that they like. I have not done a lot of the tech-flex badges. I have only do...

EME2040 and OER's

Image
I am in an asynchronous EME2040 class. When I registered for this class, I didn't know what to expect, I honestly thought I was going to learn about projectors and smart boards because those were the only things I could think of when it came to educational technology. I have learned way more than projectors and smart boards, I've learned how to create a website, use social media for educational purposes and so much more. I like that I can schedule when I work on assignments because I'm in an asynchronous class instead of in-person or flex. When I am a teacher I plan on making my classroom an enjoyable experience by interacting with students and really getting to know them. This would make students feel welcome in my class and open to participation.  I have just recently learned about Open Educational Resources or OER's. These are basically educational resources that can be used, edited and redistributed by anyone. A website that this reminds me of is Teachers pay Teach...

Technology and Teaching

Image
When I read the assignment about creating my own website I was nervous. I thought that it was going to be extremely difficult but when it got down to it, it was fairly easy. Weebly is a great resource for anyone to create a free website. It is simple with it's applications and design tools. I think that having a class website would be something that I am interested in using in the future. It would be an all-in-one place tool for students and parents to stay up to date. Here is my website . I have learned a good bit from Diigo. I learned how to bookmark and annotate articles. This would be a good place to store information if you are writing a paper or doing a group project. I could use this tool to get an idea of how well my students understand proper annotation. I could also use Diigo as a personal tool to plan lessons with or store lesson plan information all in one place. It is very important for teachers to be aware of the latest technological advancements. It is important so ...

Websites in Education

I took a look at Mrs. Schultz's class website. On this site, she had a class calendar, an "about me" page, and a welcome video. I think that a welcome video is a great idea. In this video, she introduced herself and told students how their first day would go. A lot of children face anxiety on the first day of school and I think that seeing your teacher explain what all is going to go down on the first day reduces anxiety. This would help the first day move a lot smoother. I envision myself using technology in my professional life in many ways. An online grade book will help me keep track of my student's progress, grades, and missing assignments in an easy and efficient way. I will also use Kahoot as a simple assessment of students' understanding of key concepts. I also see myself using PowerPoint as a tool when teaching certain lessons. I really love PowerPoint when teaching, it is an easy way to have all of the material you need for your lesson in one spot. Pow...

Web Tools

My initial experience with Diggo was an introductory experience. I had never heard of Diggo before this class and I was curious. I think that Diggo is a great tool to use for group projects because you can bookmark pages that you have used as sources. When I bookmarked my article to the class Diggo, it was very simple and I had no trouble. I like how you can join multiple groups and can also have your own page. I enjoy blogging. I have never had to blog before and this was a nice introductory experience. I thought that it would be difficult to get the hang of things but Blogger is a very simple program. I like that you can customize your page and make it your own with personal decorations. I also like how easy it is to connect with other people's blogs. I feel that if I were to get seriously into blogging it would be fun to join a group of English teachers and see what they are teaching and how. One Web 2.0 tool that I have discovered is FirstClass. FirstClass is an online collabo...

The Classroom in the Digital Era

This was my first experience with Twitter and it was a bit of a learning curve. I have been keeping a lookout for the #fsu2040. I've seen people posting relatable memes about how the semester is going and how we're all tired. I really like how on Twitter you can follow a hashtag and people with common interests can use that hashtag to keep track of each other. I could use this in my career by following hashtags about English education and high school classrooms. I could use this in my current career by following hashtags about elementary schools and teaching kids how to read.  I have a personal connection to the digital divide. I grew up in a rural county and when COVID hit and classes were no longer in person, we couldn't move to online because many students in my school had no internet access. The school's solution was to give every student SAT and ACT preparation packets. This was not beneficial for all students, ninth graders didn't know the math and ...

The Importance of the Internet

Image
Looking at the standard LAFS.910.L.3.4, I feel prepared to teach it based on my current skill set. This standard basically says that a students needs to learn how to use context clues to find out a rough meaning of the word. Then the student should learn how to conjugate the word and use it in multiple scenarios. Then the student should learn how to look up the word in a dictionary or thesaurus. Then the student should learn how to verify their original guess of the meaning of the word against the dictionary or thesaurus. The reason why I feel that I could teach this is because I use these skills almost every day. When I don't know what a word means I use context clues and guess and then look it up in the online dictionary.  I feel this is a useful skill and I would be passionate about teaching it. One resource I found on the CPALMS educator tool kit was the "Power of Words Student Example." This is a lesson on rhetoric and it gives examples of point of view, logos, etho...
