Technology in the Classroom
Technology has become such a big part of the modern classroom. This has many benefits as well as precautions that need to be taken. The internet gives educators a plethora of lesson plans, worksheets, educational videos, and crafts. When using these resources, educators must be careful and abide by the rules of copyright and Fair Use. Copyright is a way to protect one's intellectual property. If someone has copyrighted something it means that only they have the say in who uses their intellectual property and how it is used. Fair Use is also another thing that educators need to be conscious of. Fair use basically says that people can use copyrighted material for purposes that are non-profit and educational. This doesn't mean that an educator could photocopy a whole book, the use has to be within reason. I would deal with copyright and fair use as a teacher by giving the author or creator of the material I'm using in class credit as I was teaching. If I was to create a lesson plan and put it on the internet for other teachers to use, I would be glad that, if copyrighted, other educators are using my material to help students learn. I would teach my students about copyright and fair use and tell them that if they created something and put it on the internet, anyone can use it so they should be careful.
Two common technology implementation issues are cyberbullying and academic dishonesty. To help eliminate academic honesty I would explain the consequences of plagiarism at the beginning of the year, those being, failing the assignment, failing the semester, or being dropped from the class. I will equip my students with resources to help them easily find information and will have office hours so they can talk out the assignment and have a plan instead of plagiarizing. I will also allow students to have extensions on assignments so they have no need to panic and plagiarize if they don't have enough time to finish an assignment. I will try and eliminate cyberbullying in my classroom by explaining the consequences and making the mental health services at the school known so that the cyberbully and person being bullied both have someone to reach out to. Bullies bully because of inner turmoil and offering services can help solve issues and eliminate bullying.
I learned how to use the column feature in Microsoft Word and use the shading tool to make my class newsletter. I could improve the newsletter by using a different program to make it. If I made the entire thing on Canva I feel I would have been better oriented because I use Canva to design things more than Word. I feel that using Word to create the newsletter strengthened my skills in Word. This will help me in my future career so that I can help students and other educators when they are having trouble with Microsoft Word. I had fun creating my newsletter and getting reoriented with Microsoft Word. Below is a screenshot of my newsletter.

Yes, teaching the importance of intellectual property is important. Nevertheless, don't forget to teach the importance of sharing and using CCL for their creative works.
ReplyDeleteI agree on your notes about cyberbullying and academic dishonesty. Both are substantial issues and I think its great that you will focus on those issues when you get into the classroom
