The Classroom in the Digital Era

This was my first experience with Twitter and it was a bit of a learning curve. I have been keeping a lookout for the #fsu2040. I've seen people posting relatable memes about how the semester is going and how we're all tired. I really like how on Twitter you can follow a hashtag and people with common interests can use that hashtag to keep track of each other. I could use this in my career by following hashtags about English education and high school classrooms. I could use this in my current career by following hashtags about elementary schools and teaching kids how to read.  I have a personal connection to the digital divide. I grew up in a rural county and when COVID hit and classes were no longer in person, we couldn't move to online because many students in my school had no internet access. The school's solution was to give every student SAT and ACT preparation packets. This was not beneficial for all students, ninth graders didn't know the math and ...

The Importance of the Internet

Looking at the standard LAFS.910.L.3.4, I feel prepared to teach it based on my current skill set. This standard basically says that a students needs to learn how to use context clues to find out a rough meaning of the word. Then the student should learn how to conjugate the word and use it in multiple scenarios. Then the student should learn how to look up the word in a dictionary or thesaurus. Then the student should learn how to verify their original guess of the meaning of the word against the dictionary or thesaurus. The reason why I feel that I could teach this is because I use these skills almost every day. When I don't know what a word means I use context clues and guess and then look it up in the online dictionary.  I feel this is a useful skill and I would be passionate about teaching it. One resource I found on the CPALMS educator tool kit was the "Power of Words Student Example." This is a lesson on rhetoric and it gives examples of point of view, logos, etho...

Technology in the Classroom

Technology has become such a big part of the modern classroom. This has many benefits as well as precautions that need to be taken. The internet gives educators a plethora of lesson plans, worksheets, educational videos, and crafts. When using these resources, educators must be careful and abide by the rules of copyright and Fair Use. Copyright is a way to protect one's intellectual property. If someone has copyrighted something it means that only they have the say in who uses their intellectual property and how it is used. Fair Use is also another thing that educators need to be conscious of. Fair use basically says that people can use copyrighted material for purposes that are non-profit and educational. This doesn't mean that an educator could photocopy a whole book, the use has to be within reason. I would deal with copyright and fair use as a teacher by giving the author or creator of the material I'm using in class credit as I was teaching. If I was to create a lesson...

Technology and the Digital Space

I have been using Microsoft Word ever since I was in the third grade so, for about eleven years now. When I was in the eighth grade I took a class and became certified in Microsoft Word. I have used it to write papers, create posters, and take notes. Usually, I know where all the tools are in Word but when I forget where one is the help bar comes in handy. I have tried out Google Docs but I like Word better. I think the reason behind my preferring Word to other word processors is because I have known how to use it for quite some time.  The ISTE has seven standards for educators and they are learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, facilitator, and analyst. Every standard is important and helps teachers be good role models for their students. I feel that the most important standard is that teachers should be citizens and show their students how to be good and responsible online citizens. The internet is a big and daunting place, especially for students and they need to know...

EME Blog 1

Hi, I’m Oscar! I’m the oldest child out of my three siblings. When I graduate I hope to have my masters and bachelors and to use those degrees to be an English teacher. Some of my hobby’s include hanging out with friends, writing and caring for my houseplants. Over quarantine I needed something to keep me busy so I got into houseplants.  I haven’t used that much technology in an education setting, but I’ve used some. I’ve used Canva to make posters and flyers for projects. When assigned to make a presentation I almost always use powerpoint, I find it the easiest option for me. Projectors and smart boards have been around since I was in elementary school and have always fascinated me. I recently learned what a PLN (Personal Learning Network) is. My PLN includes my old teachers that I contact by text or e-mail. I ask them questions for writing papers. I also use google quite a bit to look up the meaning of certain words. I also use instagram to find new study methods.
